Meritorious Artist Xuân Hinh – A Master of Chèo Comedy

Meritorious Artist Xuân Hinh was born on 8 April 1963 in Yên Việt Village, Đông Cứu Commune, Gia Bình District, Bắc Ninh Province.

Growing up in a poor family, he took on many different jobs from an early age to help his parents support the education of his younger siblings. Those who have had the opportunity to know him personally often describe a Xuân Hinh quite different from the image sometimes attributed to him. Warm, approachable, outspoken and straightforward, he is, in the words of his friends, “someone you can truly count on” — far removed from the impression of an arrogant or difficult personality that has occasionally been associated with him.

Xuân Hinh was among the first generation of students to receive university-level professional training in Chèo performance.

Under the dedicated guidance of renowned masters such as Dịu Hương, Mạnh Tuấn, Bùi Trọng Đang, and composer Hoàng Kiều, he quickly discovered and developed what would later become his greatest artistic strength: the traditional comic roles of Chèo.

Comedy seems to have become second nature to Xuân Hinh.

Even in ordinary conversation, one can hear the unmistakable comic rhythm and tonal quality of Chèo in his voice. His manner of speaking carries an instinctive theatrical wit, as though humour itself has become part of his artistic blood.

Whether speaking of joy or sorrow, Xuân Hinh has an extraordinary ability to transform everyday experience through the particular humour of Chèo, making audiences laugh and, in doing so, somehow feel that a burden has been lifted from their hearts.

After graduating from university, he was invited to remain as a lecturer in the Chèo Department.

Teaching brought prestige and responsibility, but it could not satisfy his deepest desire: to perform.

Xuân Hinh wanted to be on stage, to immerse himself completely in his characters and to give everything he had to a performance. While teaching, he therefore continued to perform with the Nhị Hà Chèo Troupe, founded by musician Thao Giang and Dr Trần Trí Trắc — an early example of bringing Chèo beyond the framework of state-run professional companies.

A Master of the Classical Chèo Clown

Following in the tradition of People’s Artist Mạnh Tuấn, Xuân Hinh became one of the most accomplished interpreters of the archetypal comic characters of classical Chèo.

His portrayal of Cả Sứt, or more affectionately Cu Sứt, remains one of the defining performances of his career.

Many distinguished Chèo artists had portrayed the character before him, yet for many audiences it was Xuân Hinh’s Cu Sứt who seemed to bring the role to its fullest comic life.

The performance became so influential that it created something of a phenomenon within the Chèo community. Other performers began imitating elements of Xuân Hinh’s interpretation: his distinctive voice, his plaintive singing filled with self-pity and wounded resignation, the trembling crooked arm, the unsteady steps, and the swaying, lopsided figure that seemed constantly on the verge of collapsing to the ground.

Although Xuân Hinh deeply respected the traditional performance vocabulary taught to him by masters such as Mạnh Tuấn and Dịu Hương, he never simply reproduced what he had inherited.

Instead, he heightened and reshaped the role in his own unmistakable “Xuân Hinh style”, bringing a contemporary immediacy to the character while preserving its foundations in classical Chèo.

His interpretation of Cu Sứt has consistently received warm acclaim from audiences both in Vietnam and abroad.

A Distinctive Comic Voice of Northern Vietnam

Xuân Hinh joined the Hanoi Chèo Troupe in 1990.

Only a year later, in 1991, his portrayal of the comic character Cu Sứt earned him the title of Young Theatre Talent of Hanoi.

In 1992, he received a Gold Medal at the National Traditional Theatre Singing Competition.

The following year, in 1993, Xuân Hinh won another Gold Award at the National Festival of Outstanding Tuồng and Chèo Excerpts for his portrayal of a fortune teller.

His distinctive comic artistry, vocal talent and extraordinary stage presence eventually earned him an affectionate title from audiences:

“The Foremost Comic Artist of Northern Vietnam.”

A Living Keeper of Chèo Heritage

Artists capable of serving as true “living repositories” of the traditional Chèo repertoire have become increasingly rare.

Xuân Hinh is one of them.

Through his deep command of the classical comic role system, his instinctive understanding of Chèo humour, and his ability to renew traditional performance without losing its essential character, he has helped preserve a body of artistic knowledge that cannot be fully captured in books or archives alone.

Together with fellow artists such as Meritorious Artist Thúy Mùi, Meritorious Artist Quốc Anh and Thu Huyền, Xuân Hinh has played an important role in keeping the flame of Chèo alive within the continuing flow of Vietnamese culture.

For generations of audiences, his art represents far more than laughter.

Behind every comic gesture, every exaggerated movement and every playful line lies the accumulated wisdom, humanity and theatrical vitality of Chèo — a traditional art form that continues to speak to contemporary life.
