People’s Artist Quốc Anh – A Distinguished Figure of the Chèo Stage
People’s Artist Quốc Anh was born into a family with a strong artistic tradition. His grandfather, artist Hai Bích, founded a Chèo and cải lương troupe that was once widely known across Thanh Hóa Province and several provinces in central Vietnam. Both of Quốc Anh’s parents were also artists.
There were seven siblings in the family, all of whom showed an aptitude for singing. Yet Quốc Anh was the only one who chose to pursue the arts professionally — a path to which he would devote his life.
Today, Quốc Anh is regarded as one of the veteran and highly respected faces of the Chèo world. Beyond his reputation as a Chèo artist, over the past decade audiences have also become familiar with another side of him: Quốc Anh the comic performer. He has likewise won considerable affection through his appearances in long-running television dramas.
People’s Artist Thúy Mùi, then Director of Hanoi Chèo Theatre, always spoke highly of Quốc Anh as both a colleague and a close artistic collaborator whose exceptional performances helped strengthen the Theatre’s reputation.
His portrayals of Nguyễn Trãi in Oan Khuất Một Thời and Cao Bá Quát in Cao Bá Quát — two productions created in celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thăng Long – Hanoi — left a profound impression on audiences. Through these roles, Quốc Anh brought to the stage two great cultural figures of historic Thăng Long, men of remarkable intellect and character whose lives ultimately ended in tragedy.
An Artist of Exceptional Versatility
One of Quốc Anh’s greatest strengths is his extraordinary versatility.
He has successfully portrayed virtually every major character type in the Chèo repertoire: refined scholar roles such as Thiện Sĩ, Từ Thức, Trương Viên and Lưu Bình; both short-costume and long-costume comic roles; princes in productions such as The Persian Queen and Tấm Cám; as well as morally flawed, cunning or comic characters including Trần Phương, Thúc Sinh, the lustful village chief, and Bá Kiến.
His repertoire also includes major historical and cultural figures such as Nguyễn Trãi and Cao Bá Quát.
More recently, he made a particularly memorable impression as the “fake high-ranking mandarin” in Quan Lớn Về Làng, a production that received a Gold Medal at the National Festival of Contemporary Chèo.
For his own performance in the production, Quốc Anh not only received an individual Gold Medal, but was also honoured by the Organising Committee and the Vietnam Stage Artists Association with the award for Outstanding Performer of the Festival.
What is remarkable is that, regardless of the role, Quốc Anh brings to each character a rare combination of depth, warmth and theatrical charm. Whether noble or comic, heroic or flawed, his performances consistently possess the ability to captivate audiences.
Nguyễn Trãi – Tragedy Given Voice
In the role of Nguyễn Trãi, Quốc Anh gave himself completely to the character.
He conveyed the profound tragedy and unbearable injustice of a man condemned to suffer the punishment of the execution of three generations of his family. Nguyễn Trãi understands the catastrophe unfolding around him but is powerless to prevent it. All he can do is endure the bitterness and grief of watching those closest to him face a terrible death.
His fellow artists admired him all the more for the emotional intensity with which he poured his heart into the role.
The scene of Nguyễn Trãi’s seven expressions of gratitude to those who had shared and shaped his life became deeply moving in Quốc Anh’s performance.
Likewise, the seven jars of “immortal wine”, offered by ordinary people as a final tribute to the respected official they loved and admired, seemed to acquire a spirit of their own — accompanying him symbolically on his final journey into eternity.
The recited verses and Chèo melodies performed by Nguyễn Trãi, carried by Quốc Anh’s warm and deeply expressive voice, added further emotional concentration to the character and gave the performance an unmistakable Chèo quality.
More Than Three Decades of Devotion to Chèo
By that time, 31 years had passed since Quốc Anh first entered the performing arts and devoted himself to Chèo. Over those decades, he achieved considerable artistic success and became one of the names who helped bring distinction to the Chèo stage.
There were periods in his life when both his professional career and personal circumstances seemed less than kind to him. Yet Quốc Anh continued to believe in himself and in the path he had chosen.
As an old saying reminds us, life never gives everything to one person — but neither does it take everything away.
With ten Gold Medals at National Professional Theatre Festivals, along with numerous other awards recognising his talent and his contributions to the preservation and development of Chèo, Quốc Anh has made an important contribution not only to Hanoi Chèo Theatre, but to Vietnamese Chèo as a whole.
His artistry, dedication and exceptional versatility have made him fully deserving of the title People’s Artist and established him as one of the most distinguished figures of the contemporary Chèo stage.
