Hanoi Chèo Theatre: A Year of Remarkable Achievements in 2025
Building on the achievements of 2025, Hanoi Chèo Theatre will continue its artistic momentum in 2026 by focusing on the implementation of its Theatre in Schools Project, with two new productions, while also restoring and preserving two additional classical Chèo works.
The year 2025 came to a close with a series of significant artistic milestones, reaffirming the vitality and enduring appeal of Chèo in the heart of the Vietnamese capital.
Through the dedication of its artists, performers and staff, Hanoi Chèo Theatre successfully fulfilled its artistic and cultural mission, presenting audiences with a diverse range of high-quality productions.
During the year, the Theatre staged four new productions:
Chuyện Chú Cuội Cây Đa, Nặng Gánh Sơn Hà, Nắng Về Bến Sông, and Đào Liễu.
At the same time, the Theatre continued to enhance the artistic quality of major works in its repertoire. A particular highlight was Nước Mắt Trạng Quỳnh, which received a Silver Medal at the 2025 National Chèo Festival.
The production’s success was further recognised through a series of prestigious individual awards, including four Gold Medals and five Silver Medals for performers, as well as awards for Outstanding Director and Outstanding Performer.
Another Hanoi Chèo Theatre production, Nặng Gánh Sơn Hà, was nominated in the “Theatrical Excellence” category of the Tinh Hoa Việt Awards 2025.
As part of its ongoing commitment to preserving the heritage of traditional Chèo, the Theatre also successfully revived the classical production Trinh Nguyên.
Bringing Chèo to Audiences at Home and Abroad
Throughout 2025, Hanoi Chèo Theatre presented approximately 150 performances, reaching an audience of around 120,000 people.
The Theatre contributed to a wide range of major political, historical and cultural events, including commemorations of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam’s National Day on 2 September, and the 18th Congress of the Hanoi Party Committee.
Its artists also participated in major cultural events such as World Culture Day in Hanoi and the Thăng Long – Hanoi Festival 2025.
Beyond national events, Hanoi Chèo Theatre continued to play an active role in international cultural exchange. The Theatre welcomed a delegation from Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, and presented Vietnamese culture to international audiences in Minsk, Belarus.
The Theatre is also preparing a series of performances to welcome the New Year and celebrate the Party and the traditional Lunar New Year in 2026.
Keeping the Chèo Stage Alive
Alongside its large-scale performances, Hanoi Chèo Theatre continued to introduce younger generations to traditional theatre through selected Chèo excerpts performed for students at Đại Nam Theatre.
Of particular significance is the programme “Hanoi Saturday Night”, first launched in 2017 and maintained regularly ever since. Through this initiative, the lights of the Chèo stage continue to shine week after week.
Every Saturday evening, the Hoàn Kiếm pedestrian area has also become a familiar cultural meeting place, where the distinctive sound of Chèo drums once again resonates through the heart of the capital, bringing traditional performances to local residents and visitors alike.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Building on the achievements of 2025, Hanoi Chèo Theatre will focus in 2026 on implementing its Theatre in Schools Project, with two new productions designed to bring Chèo closer to younger audiences.
At the same time, the Theatre will continue its work of restoring and preserving two additional classical Chèo productions, contributing to the safeguarding of Vietnam’s traditional theatrical heritage.
The Theatre’s artists are also developing a wide range of new artistic programmes and productions, with the aim of continuing to serve audiences, enriching the cultural life of the capital, and ensuring that the voice of Chèo remains vibrant in contemporary society.
With tradition as its foundation and renewal as its driving force, Hanoi Chèo Theatre enters 2026 with the ambition to bring Chèo to ever wider audiences while preserving the distinctive spirit of this uniquely Vietnamese art form.
